Hildur Margrét Gunnarsdóttir and Snædís Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir created the project “New strain of algae” in collaboration with SagaNatura and was nominated for the Innovation Award by the President of Iceland.

The aim of the project was to develop methods that encourage algae to produce omega-3 fatty acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acid omega-3 is essential for our health but, as things stand today, it is mainly produced from oil obtained from fish. With the changing climate and increased awareness the value of cleaner and more environmentally friendly options is steadily increasing and more people are starting to prefer non-animal products. Therefore it is necessary to bring a product to the Icelandic market that meets these requirements of society.
